The Cosmetology Program provides the 1500 clock hours of training required to be eligible to take the State Board Exam for licensure. The first 200 hours are in general theory classes – clinical and classroom. Students practice techniques on mannequins and on fellow students. After 200 hours, students are allowed to provide services to patrons in the clinic. The students will attend summer hours (approximately 100). Cosmetology includes classroom and practical experiences concerned with a variety of beauty treatments, including the beautification of hair and skin care, facial massage, facial make up. Instruction includes training in giving shampoos, rinses, and scalp treatments; hair styling, setting, cutting, coloring, lightening, and fitting wigs; permanent waving; facials; manicuring; and, hand and arm massaging. Scientific knowledge related to anatomy, chemistry, electricity and light therapy, bacteriology, hygiene, and sanitation will be emphasized. Additional instruction in the areas of small business (salon) management, record keeping, and customer relations are provided in this course. Instruction is designed to qualify students for the licensing examination. The student will have active participation in life skill classes, including employability skills, personal growth leadership skills, safety measures, Indiana Cosmetology Laws and OSHA.
