Remember today’s training for career, technical and college skills helps lead the way to future career success.  All our participating high schools offer a wide selection of career and college readiness (CTE) courses—not only will high school studies in English, Math and Science prove vital, but taking courses from the many CTE  offerings helps prepare students for future success and  direct them toward career paths of interest.

Classes in CTE help the student use these core subjects to learn how to design and build front porch railings, apply these basics to learning to take a patient’s blood pressure, assess their medical needs and administer doctor’s orders, plan menu and prepare a banquet meal, repair a vehicle’s transmission, and program and repair a computer.

Twin Rivers Career and Technical Education strives to provide 11th and 12th grade students at 14 area high schools with many opportunities for applied or technical learning—experiences that provide hands-on and interactive learning and lead to career skills for all students whether they will be seeking additional training and a college education beyond the senior year or hoping to gain employment directly after high school.

“There are three broad sets of skills students need to be career-ready:  core academic skills, employability skills and technical skills,” according to the Association for Career and Technical Education in an April 2010 news release.  This reinforces and supports the importance that area high schools and Twin Rivers place on preparing students to be college- and career-ready.

Many of the high schools in the Twin Rivers area offer course options such as Principles of Engineering, Web Design, Agriculture, Welding, Accounting, and Computer Applications to name a few. These courses along with many others are designed to prepare the student with an educational background that colleges will prefer, skills that employers seek, and a readiness to be a successful employee.

Twin Rivers, which is a cooperative of 13 school corporations in five counties, hosts Health Careers, Automotive Service Technology, and Building Trades training sites for Knox, Daviess, and Martin counties in Washington, Indiana.  In addition to the Washington training site, there is a similar Twin Rivers site in Linton, Indiana, that serves Greene and Sullivan counties.

Twin Rivers also offers courses through Vincennes University such as Architectural Drafting, Collision Repair, Computer Integrated Manufacturing, Diesel Mechanics, Electronics, Law Enforcement, Welding, and others.  These programs offer dual credit so the student receives both high school credit and college credit.

Twin Rivers’ Auto Service Tech instructor, Dewayne Mayfield, says, “After graduating from the Twin Rivers program myself in 1986, I absolutely love teaching it!  The instructing and teaching is so rewarding.  Seeing the students light up when they do get it and they want to show you!”

Building Trades students begin each school year with a building site and quickly work to transform it into a home—digging footers, framing, roofing, electrical, plumbing, dry walling and creating a finished product by springtime for a lucky family!  Imagine arriving to class each day, dressed to work at the site and seeing with pride what young builders have created!

With the changes that loom in education and the pressure to increase student performance, combining core academics with applied, hands on learning is vital.  Tomorrow’s employers seek the worker ready to apply information and skills to concrete situations.

Career & technical education-“learning today in order to earn tomorrow!”
